Itinerary

Day 1

Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake

Your Salkantay adventure begins before sunrise with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We will leave the city behind and travel through the beautiful Andean countryside toward Mollepata, where you will enjoy breakfast while surrounded by impressive mountain landscapes.

After breakfast, we continue by transportation to Challacancha, the official starting point of our trek. Here, you will meet our trekking team, organize your duffel bag, receive important information from your guide, and begin your hiking adventure through the Andes.

The first section of the trail follows a peaceful mountain path alongside an ancient water channel leading toward Soraypampa. As you gradually gain altitude, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-covered Humantay and Salkantay mountains.

Upon arrival at Soraypampa, you will settle into the Sky Dome Camp and enjoy lunch surrounded by spectacular high-altitude scenery.

In the afternoon, we begin the hike toward the famous Humantay Lake. The uphill trail requires a steady pace, but the reward is unforgettable: a stunning turquoise lagoon located beneath a majestic glacier.

After spending time enjoying this incredible natural wonder and taking photographs, we return to camp to relax, enjoy hot drinks, dinner, and your first night beneath the Andean sky.

Day 2

Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Salkantay Lake – Collpapampa

The highest and most spectacular mountain stage of the Salkantay Trek

Your second day begins early with a hot drink at camp before breakfast. Today is the most challenging and rewarding section of the trek as we make our way toward the famous Salkantay Pass, surrounded by some of the most impressive landscapes in the Peruvian Andes.

After breakfast, we begin our ascent through a wide glacial valley. The trail gradually climbs toward the high mountain pass, where the scenery changes from green valleys to a more rugged landscape filled with rocks, glaciers, and towering peaks.

As we gain altitude, your guide will set a comfortable pace and recommend regular breaks to help you adjust to the elevation. Along the way, you will enjoy incredible views of the Salkantay Mountain, one of the most sacred peaks in Andean tradition.

Upon reaching the Salkantay Pass, located at approximately 4,650 meters (15,256 feet), you will have time to rest, take photographs, and learn more about the cultural importance of this majestic mountain.

When weather and trail conditions allow, we will make a short detour to visit Salkantay Lake, a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

After this unforgettable experience, we begin our descent toward Rayanniyoc, where we will enjoy lunch. The trail continues through changing landscapes as we enter a greener valley and gradually leave the high Andes behind.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Collpapampa, where you will settle into the second panoramic camp. Enjoy hot drinks, dinner, and a well-deserved rest after the highest section of the adventure.

Day 3

Collpapampa – Cloud Forest – Lucmabamba – Coffee Experience – Cocalmayo

Tropical landscapes, local flavors and a relaxing afternoon in the cloud forest

After breakfast, we leave the high mountains behind and continue our journey into the beautiful cloud forest. Today’s route offers a completely different environment, with warmer temperatures, lush vegetation, rivers, waterfalls, fruit plantations, orchids, and small local farms along the way.

The trail follows a gradual descent through one of the most diverse ecosystems of the Salkantay route. As we walk through this transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon, you will have the opportunity to observe different types of plants, birds, and the incredible natural beauty of the region.

Around lunchtime, we arrive at Lucmabamba, a small community surrounded by coffee plantations. After settling into the camp, we will enjoy a unique local experience by visiting a coffee farm.

During the coffee experience, local producers will introduce you to the complete process of Peruvian coffee production, from the cultivation of the coffee plant to the final cup. Depending on the season, you may participate in harvesting coffee beans, learn about drying and roasting techniques, and taste freshly prepared coffee directly from the producers.

In the afternoon, you may have the opportunity to visit Cocalmayo Hot Springs by local transportation. These natural thermal pools are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the warm mineral waters surrounded by tropical landscapes.

After this relaxing experience, we return to Lucmabamba for dinner and rest before the next day’s adventure toward Llactapata and Machu Picchu.

Day 4

Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes

An ancient Inca viewpoint and the final approach to Machu Picchu

After breakfast, we begin today’s adventure with a steady climb through a less-traveled section of the ancient Inca Trail toward the Puncuyoc Pass.

The trail ascends through lush vegetation, fruit plantations, and beautiful mountain landscapes, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys. As we continue climbing, we reach Llactapata, an impressive archaeological site strategically located on a mountain ridge facing Machu Picchu.

Here, your guide will explain the history and importance of this fascinating Inca site while you explore its ancient terraces, stone structures, and ceremonial areas. On clear days, Llactapata offers the first distant view of Machu Picchu, framed by the majestic Machu Picchu Mountain, Huayna Picchu, and the Aobamba Canyon.

After enjoying this unique viewpoint, we begin our descent toward the Hydroelectric area. The trail takes us through changing landscapes, from mountain paths to warmer subtropical forests.

Upon arrival at Hydroelectric, we will enjoy lunch and take some time to rest before continuing the final section of the trek.

The last part of the route follows the valley alongside the railway tracks toward Aguas Calientes. This peaceful walk through the cloud forest allows you to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding Machu Picchu.

Once in Aguas Calientes, you will check into your hotel, enjoy dinner in town, and rest before the next morning’s unforgettable visit to Machu Picchu.

Day 5

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes, we will take the bus up to Machu Picchu, one of the most impressive archaeological wonders in the world and the final highlight of your Salkantay adventure.

Your entrance time and the visiting route will depend on the official Machu Picchu ticket assigned by the Peruvian authorities. Once inside the citadel, your guide will lead you through the authorized circuit, sharing the history, mysteries, and importance of this extraordinary Inca sanctuary.

During the guided tour, you will explore impressive terraces, ancient temples, ceremonial areas, residential sectors, and the sophisticated water systems that demonstrate the advanced knowledge of the Inca civilization.

Your guide will also explain the connection between Machu Picchu and the surrounding sacred mountains, helping you understand why this place was one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of the Inca Empire.

The guided visit usually lasts around two hours, although the exact duration depends on the assigned circuit and current regulations established by the authorities.

After the visit, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time before your train departure. Lunch is not included, allowing you to choose a restaurant according to your preference.

Later, you will board the train toward Ollantaytambo, enjoying beautiful views of the Urubamba River, green valleys, and the landscapes of the Sacred Valley.
